Nature

The Welschneudorf plateau is bounded by the Emsbach Valley to the west, the Gelbach Valley to the east and the Nassau-Lahn Valley to the south. The streams flowing down from the plateau have cut deep, sometimes highly winding gorges in the direction of the surrounding valleys. Forest covers 60 percent of the municipality. The Stelzenbach nature forest reserve is designated as a site for environmental education and experiencing nature.

History

After the Thirty Years' War, Walloon charcoal burners settled in Welschneudorf. The Walloon settlement gave the former name Neudorf the addition “Welsch”.

The Electoral Trier hunting arsenal was built in 1707 and now houses the church and the Kurfürstenhalle. The Church of St. John the Baptist was consecrated in 1829 within the former hunting arsenal.

Hiking Trails

The Köhlerrunde starts and ends at Welschneudorf village square and has twelve stations. Its stations and waypoints include a Celtic hilltop settlement, a medieval hollow-way system and remains of the Roman Limes. It also passes the Drei Kreuzen, Wildgraben, the basalt quarry and the Alexander Tower. QR codes along the Köhlerrunde provide background information for adults and children. Around the Dielkopf on the Köhlerrunde, the ARGO Augmented Archaeology app presents a 3D charcoal kiln and a reconstruction of a Celtic hilltop fortification.

The Köhlerrunde can be reached by bus route 456 from Montabaur ICE railway station, Bad Ems main station or Nassau railway station. Alight at Welschneudorf Rathaus; the route starts at the village square.

The Welschneudorf starting point of the Lahn-Westerwald Circular Trail can be reached by car from Montabaur via the L327. In Welschneudorf, the trail starts at the car park near the Kurfürstenhalle. The Lahn-Westerwald Circular Trail runs through the southwestern Westerwald and reaches the Gelbach Heights near Welschneudorf.
