Bodenbach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Roman Villa Bodenbach is an archaeological site: a civilian estate from the 1st century AD was converted into a military fortification in the 3rd century. Its reconstructed layout and information panels present the site as an open-air museum in the landscape.

History

The Catholic church in Bodenbach is a Neoclassical hall church dating from 1829; it was extended and raised in 1950. South of the village runs the Seven Sorrows of Mary Stations Way, with shrine-like stations donated in 1816 and renewed in 1916. One station in Bodenbach describes seven devotional stations that were donated in 1816.

Seven wayside crosses stand on Kollengasse in the direction of Bongard. They were erected in 1816 and restored in 1916 and 1999. Near Bodenbach, the Heyer Chapel, a Neo-Romanesque chapel, is located on the Heyerberg near Borler. Fourteen Stations of the Cross are arranged concentrically around it; the chapel has been protected as a cultural monument since 1992. Also nearby, experts date the Barsberg ring wall to the Iron Age.

Nature

The Bodenbacher Drees is a carbonated spring in the valley of the Bongarder Bach, emerging from Lower Devonian sedimentary rocks. A ring of basalt columns has protected the lower-lying spring from being washed over by floodwater since 1993. A geological information panel at the Bodenbacher Drees explains the geology, the area's volcanic past and its mineral composition.

The Bodenbacher Drees can be reached via the L70 and L72. There is a car park on the road between Bodenbach and Borler; from there, follow the sign “Zum Drees”. The Bodenbach–Bongard themed circular trail passes a Roman villa and a Celtic settlement.
