Grimburg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Grimburg Castle can generally be visited free of charge year-round. During the winter weather period from November to March, the keep, playground and toilet facilities remain closed.

Culture and History

Guided tours explain the development of the castle and medieval life. There are also special child-friendly tours; the tours last around 90 minutes.

In the center of Grimburg, the Grimburg Castle and Witch Museum is located in an 18th-century farmhouse. The exhibition displays original finds from Grimburg Castle, including coins, locks, tools, household objects, crockery, jewelry, stove plates and bricks.

The museum also presents the history of the persecution of witches in the Trier region. Large-format panels and facsimiles document the witch trials. A media room focuses on the castle landscape of the former Electorate of Trier during the time of Archbishop and Elector Baldwin of Luxembourg. The history of the castle also includes the fact that Grimburg was built at the end of the 12th century as a territorial castle of Trier. The museum also documents that more than 200 men and women from the Hochwald region died in a burning hut as alleged witches.

Nature

The Wadrilltal nature reserve between Felsenmühle and Grimburg covers around 213 hectares and includes parts of Grimburg. The meadows in which the Wadrill is embedded are protected.

Hiking and Cycling

The section of the Saar-Hunsrück Trail from Grimburgerhof to Reinsfeld begins at the partially reconstructed Grimburg Castle on a ridge above the Wadrill Valley. A path from the valley near Grimburgerhof gradually climbs up to the castle. The section follows the quiet, unspoiled Wadrill Valley and offers changing views of its stream landscape. Those who climb the castle tower can look out over the Wadrill Valley.

Near Grimburg, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail branches off; hikers can continue towards Trier along one route. The Grimburgerhof–Kell Reservoir section meets the Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route and provides an access route for visitors heading to Kell. It ends at Kell Reservoir, which offers numerous leisure activities.

The Ruwer-Hochwald Cycle Route is fully asphalted and designed for cyclists, inline skaters and pedestrians. Grimburg Castle can be reached directly from there or via a detour.
