Wallhalben: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The Mühlenweg trail in Wallhalben passes 13 mills over a distance of 23 kilometres. Signs explain their historical significance and their former economic importance.

Nature

The Wallhalb and Schwarzbach valleys are promoted for hiking and cycling. The landscape is shaped by its historic mill culture and rural life.

The Palatinate Mill Country around Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben offers hiking trails through forests and meadows and along streams, as well as opportunities for cycling and mountain biking. Some routes offer views towards Saarland and Alsace.

Trails

During the recurring cycling day in the Wallhalb Valley, the L475 and the Mühlenradweg cycle path are opened to cyclists, skaters and pedestrians, while motorised traffic is prohibited. The cycling day includes a service station for minor bicycle repairs.

A brochure with descriptions and maps of 20 hiking trails is available for the Palatinate Mill Country. There is also a map of the Thaleischweiler-Wallhalben collective municipality showing marked hiking trails.

History

Wallhalben was first mentioned in a document in 1270 and was an administrative and judicial centre in the Middle Ages. The Lords of Leiningen authorised five markets a year in Wallhalben.

Culture

The Sickinger Grumbeeremarkt focuses on potato dishes and other regional cuisine as part of its culinary programme. The farmers' market at the Sickinger Grumbeeremarkt provides space for hobby artists and producers of regional products; it also includes a pharmacy museum.

TIERART in Maßweiler is a rescue centre for injured, orphaned and sick native wild and domestic animals, as well as confiscated exotic animals. TIERART is accessed via the L475 and the Wallhalben exit, not via the Maßweiler exit.
