Reichenberg combines a medieval castle above the village with historic paths through the municipal area. Construction of Reichenberg Castle began in 1319 under Count Wilhelm I of Katzenelnbogen; after his death in 1331, however, the planned size was never fully completed. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Reichenberg can then continue their accommodation search.
Culture
After the inheritance division of 1352, Count Wilhelm II continued construction with an eastern section, a hall building, and residential wings. The castle’s most prominent surviving architectural element is a shield wall four metres thick and twenty metres high. The former south tower collapsed in 1813, and the north tower in 1971.
The castle is a monument dating from the early 14th century. Its distinctive Mannerist shield wall is a special feature of late medieval castle architecture. In the surviving hall building, the ceiling rests on cushion capitals. Reichenberg Castle is privately owned and can currently only be viewed from the outside.
Paths
An official access route from Reichenberg to the Rheinsteig has existed since the beginning of September 2005. It passes the Bornsmühle, the youngest of the village’s three mills, dating from 1724. Along its route, the Rheinsteig access path passes Hof Offenthal, identified as the oldest part of Reichenberg and first documented in 1250. In the Leiselfeld area, the access path reaches the Rheinsteig.
The nearby Loreley Extra Tour crosses a short section of Reichenberg’s municipal area and is a certified circular trail of almost 15 kilometres. South of Reichenberg, the uncovered section of the historic Hessen or Roman Road is marked by an information stone. This road ran from Trier across the Rhine near St. Goarshausen to Kassel.
