Unzenberg: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The 7-kilometre Heimbach Loop leads from Kirchberg via Unzenberg-Bahnhof to Unzenberg and is described as a family-friendly tour without any major climbs. The 28-kilometre Lützelsoon Cycle Route runs from Kirchberg to Kirn and connects the Nahe Valley with the Hunsrück. The 155-kilometre Hunsrück Cycle Route extends even farther: it leads from Saarburg via Kirchberg and Simmern to Bacharach.

Cycling

Cycle routes starting in Kirchberg partly lead directly through Unzenberg or can be reached quickly from the municipality via connecting cycle paths. The 38-kilometre Schinderhannes Cycle Route runs between Emmelshausen and Simmern/Hunsrück without climbs and entirely along the former route of the Hunsrück Railway. It is described as suitable for recreational cyclists, families and skaters. In the Kirchberg holiday region, cycling is promoted for trekking bikes, e-bikes, racing bikes and gravel bikes.

Hiking

The Kirchberg holiday region has more than 100 kilometres of hiking trails and is part of the Saar-Hunsrück premium hiking region. The educational trails in the Kirchberg region are short, informative circular routes with information boards.

Culture and History

Unzenberg's heritage includes the central bell tower and six mills that were formerly associated with the village; the bell tower is described as the village's landmark. The Unzenberg village bell weighs 95 kilograms and is tuned to F-sharp. Its inscription ends with “Unzenberg 1980”. In addition, the new bronze bell in Unzenberg was installed in April 1980.

The Mördersbrücke was a 12-metre-high stone viaduct built between 1900 and 1903. It connected Engelsberg with the former provincial road towards Kirchberg. Due to an acute risk of collapse, the viaduct was demolished by blasting on 21 October 2008. Before that, Mördersbrücke was a popular photo subject for many people.

Unzenberg has a documented railway heritage: the Simmern–Kirchberg line opened a railway station there in 1901, and the last scheduled service on the line took place in May 1976. The later Unzenberg station building was constructed in the 1930s and included a ramp for handling goods.
