Morshausen: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Morshausen is situated on a hill and offers views in all directions. To the northwest, the view extends to the Moselle Valley and far into the Eifel. At the same time, the village is a stage stop on the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig, which leads from Idar-Oberstein to Boppard.

Nature and Trails

Around Morshausen, hiking routes combine with landscape and mining history. The Murscher Eselsche Dream Loop has 86 experience points. Murscher Aussichten was opened as Germany’s first certified hiking trail. Large sections of the historic mining trail were incorporated into the Murscher Eselsche Dream Loop. In the 2013 German hiking tour selection, the Dream Loop took fourth place.

The stages of the Saar-Hunsrück-Steig also lead through the village. Stage 23 runs from Morshausen through the Ehrbach Gorge to Oppenhausen and achieves an average of 85 experience points. Stage 22 leads from the Schmausemühle to Morshausen through the Baybach Gorge and over the Murscher Eselsche; it scores 102 experience points and took first place among 27 stages.

The Murscher Eselsche Dream Loop reaches a spoil heap where visitors can learn about ore mining at the Theresia mine.

On the Way

The Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Path runs through Morshausen on its 22-kilometre route from Emmelshausen to Burgen. During the ride, the cycle path offers sweeping views across the Hunsrück to the volcanic cones of the Eifel. Between Beulich and Morshausen, the Heiligenkreuz stands at the Kreuzwiese along the Schinderhannes-Untermosel Cycle Path; it was erected in 1741. Below the Murscher Eselsche Dream Loop is also the Heiligenstock, which was restored in 1982.

Culture and History

A defining historical landmark is the Schwengelbrunnen well on Brunnenstraße. It was built in the 15th century in the style of Hungarian Pusta wells and still stands today as a reminder of the past. Women used the well on laundry days in the past. The old village school in Morshausen, built in 1882, was attended by the writer Jakob Kneip from 1887.

The Jakob Kneip Museum in Morshausen displays works by the writer, part of his study, reference literature, paintings, contemporary documents, and works by artists from his circle. Admission is free; visits require an appointment in advance.

Further traces of local history can be found along the trails. The wooden figure Hampit depicts the main character of a novel by Jakob Kneip and was erected before the opening of the Murscher Eselsche trail. The mine building of the Theresia ore mine was built around 1860.

Local Traditions

The Stutzweck is part of the local customs: it is distributed every year on Good Friday after a midday church service.

Outdoor Places

At the Jakob Kneip Oak, there is a playground with a sandbox, carousel, slide, bee hotel, and a picnic and rest bench. The playground is also the starting point for the Murscher Eselsche and Murscher Aussichten trails. The Ehrenburgblick-Nord viewpoint has a rest and picnic bench overlooking Ehrenburg Castle.
