Culture and History

The history of Metzenhausen includes documented local links to iron ore extraction in the early 19th century and to quartz mining for building stone until the 1920s. The ruins of Balwinseck, Altburg, Koppenstein and Schmitburg are located in the area surrounding Metzenhausen.

Another historical testament is the Chapel of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary in Metzenhausen. It is protected as cultural property under the Hague Convention. Its oldest structural elements are believed to date from the 16th century; the chapel was renovated from 1829 to 1831. Inside, there is a Madonna on the high altar and a wooden cross dating from the 14th century.

A regional cycling route from the Hunsrück high plateau to the Moselle Valley runs through Metzenhausen and Todenroth. Along the way, the route crosses the watershed between the Nahe and Moselle rivers.
