Mengerschied: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
Mengerschied lies in the foothills of the Soonwald and stretches through the widening valley of the Lametbach. Dense Soonwald forests rise steeply to the south of the village. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Mengerschied can then continue searching for accommodation.
Landscape and Trails
The nature trail in the Lametbach valley leads from Mengerschied to Plackenstein along the Lametbach via forest and service roads. It explains the region’s geology and its influence on drinking water. From the Plackenstein Heights, views extend into the valley and across the Hunsrück.
The hike leads to a rock at a former quarry and follows the largely natural Lametbach through protected areas and wet meadows.
On the Way
The Schinderhannes-Soonwald Cycle Path passes through Mengerschied on its route from Simmern to Dickenschied. The Soonwald Dream Loop begins at Seibels Platz in the centre of Mengerschied and returns to Mengerschied via Layenkaul along a disused railway line. It offers views across the Simmerbach valley to the Idarkopf; near the end of the hike, it also provides a detour to the Hohe Klopp viewpoint.
Nature
The Bismarck Tower is a 17.5-metre-high tower made of Soonwald quartzite with a viewing platform. The area around the Nunkirche is designated as a nature reserve; six orchid species are mentioned there.
Culture and History
The Walburgis Chapel was founded between 1074 and 1081. Near Sargenroth, the Nunkirche is described as a pilgrimage church and as a filming location for Edgar Reitz’s Heimat epic.
Practical Information about the Village
Mengerschied is served by a bus connection to Simmern and towards the Nahe near Martinstein.
Mengerschied’s barbecue area is located at the edge of the forest below a former quarry, next to the Lametbach. It has a barbecue hut, a shelter, and toilets with running water. The site includes a large meadow where camping is possible. The barbecue area can be reached by car via two paved roads.
