Routes

The Hunsrück Railway between Boppard and Emmelshausen opened in 1908. An 8.5-kilometre section climbs 336 metres in elevation, passing through five tunnels and over two viaducts. The Hunsrück Railway Hiking Trail begins at Emmelshausen station and ends at Boppard Central Station; along the way, it passes gorges, tunnels and viaducts.

Halsenbach is regarded as a starting point for hikes through the Hunsrück forests and the Ehrbach Gorge. The railway stop in the district of Ehr is a stop on the Hunsrück Railway.

Nature

The Ehrbach Gorge forms a 1.5-kilometre-long section of a right-bank tributary of the Moselle. It includes wooden bridges, narrow rocky paths, moss-covered stones and waterfalls.

The S4 circular trail from Hotel Katz leads to the Mariengrotto and is approximately 4 kilometres long. The Mariengrotto is a small grotto dedicated to Mary in a rock in the Holzbachtal valley of Halsenbach-Ehr. Two benches are available there for visitors to rest. About 1.5 kilometres upstream from the Hierermühle, the Holzbachtal valley meets the Ehrbachtal Trail. The grotto was made accessible around 35 years ago through private initiative.

Geographical Setting

The Ehrbach and Baybach gorges, the Saar-Hunsrück Trail, certified circular hiking trails and cycling are associated with the Hunsrück-Middle Rhine region. The Hunsrück Railway is considered one of the steepest railway lines north of the Alps there.

Part of the Rhine-Hunsrück district lies within the UNESCO Upper Middle Rhine Valley World Heritage Site, which was recognized by UNESCO in 2002.
