Mastershausen: Holiday apartments and holiday homes

The Masdascher Burgherrenweg begins in Mastershausen and forms an approximately 13.9-kilometre circular route. Along the way are nine information stations, old mill ruins and the Balduinseck Castle ruins dating from the 13th century; there are also views across the Hunsrück landscape.

Nature and trails

The Masdascher Burgherrenweg crosses two streams on footbridges and reaches the “Am Katzenloch” rest area. Below the L 203, it continues along the stream through a floodplain forest before crossing the stream again on a footbridge. The trail then passes Kaspers Mühle and climbs towards the Burgberg.

History and culture

The Burgberg, approximately 2 km northwest of Mastershausen, is a protected archaeological monument. Evidence of Roman activity there dates from the second half of the 3rd century AD to the beginning of the 5th century. Historical features associated with Mastershausen include St. Lucia Parish Church, historic farmhouses and half-timbered houses, religious sculptures and roadside crosses, boundary stones, and Kaspersmühle dating from the 19th century.

The “Spectakel” theatre association in Mastershausen regularly stages performances and helps keep the regional dialect alive. The Masdascher Burgherrenweg also reaches the Apollo mine, where ore rather than slate was mined. The Apollo mine field was developed from 1891 onwards. Since 2008, the Galgenturm has stood on the Hunsrück plateau; it is intended to commemorate a Roman watchtower.

On the way

The “Am Fürstengrab” forest of tranquillity in Mastershausen offers an informative guided tour at 2:00 p.m. on the first Sunday of every month. The meeting point is the car park at the forest cemetery. Bus route 630 operates on weekdays on the Kastellaun–Mastershausen route (Balduinseck Castle ruins). At weekends, routes 615 and 630 operate with a change in Kastellaun.
