The castle complex defines Dill with two distinct areas: The freely accessible upper castle features sections of the curtain wall, watchtowers, a moat, the foundations of the keep, and a residential tower with a vaulted cellar. The lower castle contains a Baroque castle chapel whose paintings are associated with the Kirn artist Johann Georg Engisch.

Culture

The Protestant church in Dill was built in 1701 on the site of the former castle chapel. Its paintings form five identifiable cycles. An audio tour covers the church, its painter, and its paintings. Some half-timbered houses also contribute to the townscape with their distinctive oval windows, known as “Trempel” walls.

Hiking

The Diller Castle Trail is marked with purple signs for the Saar-Hunsrück Dream Trail and leads through an idyllic meadow valley. Dill also has a self-service kiosk on the Diller Castle Trail.

The Elfenpfad is an approximately two-kilometre section of the Diller Castle Trail. An approximately 400-metre section of the Elfenpfad runs along the Sohrbach stream. The trail is described as suitable for families with children and features clay figures by local artist Traudel Schneider.

History

The Ausonius Hiking Trail passes Dill along the former Roman road. The Ausonius Trail broadly follows the historic Roman road between Bingen and Trier. The Roman Tower near Dill is a reconstructed nine-metre-high observation tower for hikers and cyclists. From there, views extend across Dill, its castle ruins, and the wider Hunsrück landscape.

Below the Roman Tower, a section of the Roman road has been reconstructed; part of the original road from the first century has been uncovered. The rock supporting Dill Castle is encircled by the Sohrbach.
