Discover Kürrenberg: Forest Trails, Eifel Views and History
Accommodation in Kürrenberg
Kürrenberg is a district of Mayen located directly beside the Mayen municipal forest. You can experience its special character on circular trails through forests and landscapes, at viewpoints overlooking the Eifel and the Nitztal valley, and at places that tell the story of the village. This creates a varied mix of exercise, nature, sport and culture for planning your trip.
Forest Trails and Views Around Kürrenberg
Anyone wishing to discover Kürrenberg on foot will find numerous circular hiking trails with viewpoints over the Eifel and the Nitztal valley. The Reining Trail is a 5.3 km circular hiking trail through the Kürrenberg forest. It circles the Bleiberg and connects the forest with views over the Nitztal valley. This makes it a good concrete hiking option to include in your day plan if you are looking for a manageable circular tour with scenic impressions.
Another option is the wheelchair hiking trail. It starts and ends at the car park on the Reining Trail, is approximately 3.2 km long and takes about an hour. The trail has only slight elevation changes, is considered easy and is particularly suitable for wheelchairs, prams and walking frames. There are numerous places to rest and two shelters along the route. The tour is recommended for the warmer months, especially from April to September. The level route through Kürrenberg can therefore be especially appealing when a short trail with few elevation changes is desired for an outing.
The Förstersteig Dream Trail adds a circular hike through various stream valleys with panoramic views of the Eifel. If you would rather combine a sporting activity with cycling, the official MY-Trail offers an almost 500-metre-long mountain biking and freeride route in the Mayen district of Kürrenberg. Between Mayen and Mayen-Kürrenberg, the Vulkanpark climbing forest is also located on the B 258, in the middle of the forest in the East Eifel. Depending on your preferred itinerary, you can therefore choose between hiking, cycling and a visit to the climbing forest.
Culture and Local History
The Catholic Church of St. Bernhard is also a landmark in the village. It was built in 1900/1901 as a Neo-Romanesque hall church and thus represents Kürrenberg’s more recent architectural history. At the same time, the village has a serious historical side. Schinhengst was a place of execution during the witch hunts. It is reported that in 1551, among others, the Kürrenberg women Veiten Wittib, Heuser Anna, Emmerich Hey, Girhatz and Kirsten Jammers were executed there at the stake. These different historical references give a walk through Kürrenberg an additional layer of meaning.
The Right Holiday Apartment for Planning Your Trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Kürrenberg, it is worth first deciding on the main focus of your stay. If the trip is to centre primarily on forest trails and viewpoints, the Reining Trail, the wheelchair hiking trail and the Förstersteig offer different starting points for planning your day. If sport is the main focus, the MY-Trail and the Vulkanpark climbing forest come into view. For visitors wishing to combine nature and culture, St. Bernhard and the historical sites complement the outdoor activities.
When planning, therefore, consider which experiences are most important for your travel group and which route you actually wish to include. This keeps your search for a holiday apartment closely connected to your preferred holiday pace, without mixing up the various activities available locally.
