A climb from Ettringen reaches the western flank of the Bellerberg volcano. The Ettringer Bellerberg contains a 200,000-year-old crater; the Hochsimmerturm tower is Ettringen’s landmark. The townscape is characterised by volcanic rock that was quarried during industrialisation.

Nature

The climb up the Ettringer Bellerberg offers views across the volcanoes of the Eastern Eifel towards the Rhine and Moselle valleys. The lava flows of the Ettringer Bellerberg flowed towards Ettringen and Mayen.

The Volcano Trail leads through the rock labyrinth of the Kottenheimer Winfeld and continues to the Junker Schilling rock monument. Its stations feature explanatory information boards and can be explored independently.

Culture and History

In the Ettringer Lay, quarry cranes, crane foundations, building remains and old railway tracks from basalt quarrying in the 19th and 20th centuries have been preserved. The Great Wall there is a destination for sport climbing.

The Ettringen climbing area is located in basalt quarries between Mayen, Ettringen and Kottenheim at the foot of the Hochsimmer. It offers crack, dihedral and edge climbing on grippy volcanic rock.
