Grumbach: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

The former castle of the Counts of Wild and Rhine stood on a mountain spur above Grumbach’s side valley and was first mentioned in March 1242. Anyone wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Grumbach can then continue searching for accommodation.

Culture and History

Grumbach’s Protestant parish church was built from 1836 to 1838 on an artificial plateau above the former castle grounds. The church houses a Stumm organ dating from 1863, built by the Stumm brothers from Rhaunen-Sulzbach. The wooden bell tower has a portal with a door handle made by Louis Saladin.

The Rhinegravial Archive is a three-storey plastered building whose core dates from the early 17th century. An open loggia and a mansard roof were added later; the municipality uses the building as a venue for its Christmas market on the second Sunday of Advent. The Old School is depicted in an engraving from 1627 with a distinctive little tower. The former court complex included a district prison, a courtroom and the judge’s residence. The late-medieval and early modern building structure can still be discerned in the village.

Getting Around

The Grumbach Rhinegrave Circular Trail is an easy, 4.4-kilometre circular route with 100 metres of elevation gain and is suitable for pushchairs. At the same time, it is a family-friendly circular hiking trail offering scenic views and historical interest.

Lauterecken-Grumbach railway station has public transport connections towards Kaiserslautern, Kusel, Bad Kreuznach and Idar-Oberstein.

Excursions in the surrounding area include the Altenglan–Staudernheim draisine railway, Lichtenberg Castle near Kusel, the Bad Sobernheim open-air museum, Lauterecken, Meisenheim’s old town, Potzberg Wildlife Park, the Felsenkirche church in Idar-Oberstein, the Bad Sobernheim barefoot trail and the Wolfstein limestone mine.
