Altenglan: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes
The Glan Valley draisine trip follows a disused railway line between Altenglan and Lauterecken. The vehicles are pedal-powered or electrically assisted; accessible hand-operated models and models with wheelchair platforms are also available. There is no oncoming traffic. Stops along the route make it possible to visit museums, cultural attractions and regional restaurants. Those wishing to rent a holiday apartment in Altenglan can then continue searching for accommodation.
Leisure
The sports and leisure pool in Altenglan offers heated swimming and various recreational facilities: a 50-metre multi-purpose pool, diving boards, a children’s paddling pool, a leisure pool with a 60-metre slide and a playground. The facilities also include step-free access to the pool and free parking.
A hiking trail from Altenglan leads to the old provostry on Remigiusberg.
Culture and History
The Provostry Church of St Remigius and the ruins of Michelsburg stand close together on Remigiusberg, with a shallow hollow between them. St Remigius Provostry was a Benedictine monastery from 1127 to 1526, and the provostry church is the only surviving building of the former monastery. The church contains the historically valuable tombstone of Count Friedrich I of Veldenz, who died in 1327.
The ruins of Michelsburg are freely accessible year-round, although there is no winter maintenance. Lichtenberg Castle is accessible, 425 metres long, one of the longest castle ruins in Germany and the largest castle complex in the Palatinate; it is freely accessible year-round. The complex houses the Palatinate Musicians’ Museum and the Geoscope, as well as a restaurant and a modern youth hostel. The origins of Lichtenberg Castle date back to around 1200. A digital 360-degree tour provides background information via the complex’s infotainment system and QR codes.
Nature
Potzberg lies within the Königsland landscape conservation area. The path there leads through diverse flora and fauna and to traces of Roman settlement, remains of a medieval castle, wells, exposed rock conglomerate and resting places in the forest.
The main attraction of Potzberg Wildlife Park is its falconry centre. During flight demonstrations, visitors can see eagles, vultures, falcons, kites and buzzards.
Cycling
The Glan-Blies Cycle Route crosses France, Saarland and Rhineland-Palatinate, remaining close to the Blies and Glan rivers. The cross-border Glan-Blies Route runs for 130 kilometres from Sarreguemines through the Kusel Musicians’ Land, along the Glan to Staudernheim.
Large sections of the Glan-Blies Route follow disused railway lines or run alongside the draisine railway away from road traffic. The Glan-Blies Cycle Route has no long climbs, only a few short inclines, and uses dedicated paths.
Practical Information
Altenglan has a motorhome parking area directly next to the draisine railway and the Fritz Wunderlich Cycle Route. The parking area has four spaces and is wheelchair accessible. Facilities include electricity, a water supply point and waste disposal; water is unavailable from October to April.
