Wolfstein looks back on more than 730 years of history. The historic old town is freely accessible all year round; the town's sights include three museums.

Culture and History

The limestone mine on the Königsberg is an industrial monument in Wolfstein. Mining around the Königsberg massif can be traced back to Roman times. The large artificial caverns of the limestone mine reveal the geological structure of the Königsberg.

The freely accessible Neuwolfstein castle ruins were built above Wolfstein in the late 13th century. Parts of the curtain wall, the shield wall and the foundations of former buildings have been preserved; from their elevated location, they offer views over Wolfstein and the Lauter Valley.

The freely accessible Altwolfstein castle ruins date from the 12th century and are among the oldest castle complexes in the region. Their remains include a distinctive pentagonal keep, sections of the surrounding wall and traces of an outer bailey. Their elevated location offers views over the surrounding landscape.

Nature and Trails

There is a map with 12 hiking trails for the Wolfstein hiking area. Guided walks and hikes through the forest can be arranged around Wolfstein with an individually determined duration. Guided hikes through the Wolfstein Forest are also offered in cooperation with the Tourist Information Office.

The Palatinate Uplands Trail reaches Wolfstein via a spur trail and the town's railway station. Hikers on the Palatinate Uplands Trail can switch to the Veldenz Trail near Aschbach and to the Remigius Trail near Selberg.

The Wolfstein–Königsbach Trail is a 9.7-kilometre, moderately difficult hiking route. It includes narrow paths, scree slopes, small caves and a small lake.

Getting Around

Wolfstein railway station is about a five-minute walk from the town hall square. Wolfstein is served hourly by the Lautertal Railway from Kaiserslautern. Free parking is available in the town centre.

Wolfstein can be reached by bicycle via the family-friendly Lautertal Cycle Path; the route runs for more than 36 kilometres from Kaiserslautern through the Lauter Valley to Lauterecken.
