Urschmitt: Holiday Apartments and Holiday Homes

Urschmitt is described as a rural, agriculturally shaped village in the Eifel uplands. Historically, it has a documented connection with Stuben Abbey: the abbey owned a chapel in the village from 1190, and the connection continued until 1807.

Culture

The parish church of Urschmitt is dedicated to Saint Quirinus. Its Romanesque west tower dates back to a reconstruction in 1217; the church was consecrated in 1909, and one of its bells was cast in 1395.

Landscape

Urschmitt extends across relatively level terrain east of the Blinzberg. The Blinzberg is recorded as having an elevation of 430 metres above sea level.

Getting Around

Route 716 connects Urschmitt with Lutzerath and Alflen. It runs hourly, every two hours at weekends, and offers a connecting transfer to Route 700 between Cochem and Ulmen. On school days, bus route 706 runs from Urschmitt via Gevenich to Cochem and later also from Urschmitt to Lutzerath.

Excursions

The HeimatSpur Wasserfall-Erlebnisroute is a difficult 13.3-kilometre circular hike with 474 metres of ascent and descent; it begins and ends in Bad Bertrich. In the selection of “Germany’s Most Beautiful Hiking Trail” for 2023, it was awarded first place.

The “Calmont–Stuben Abbey–Petersberg” cultural circular trail combines the Moselle loop, a Late Roman fortification on the Petersberg, the ruins of the former Stuben Abbey church, and the Calmont via ferrata. The route is 7 to 9 kilometres long and takes approximately 2 to 4 hours.

The included Calmont via ferrata runs between Eller and Bremm at an altitude of 200 to 300 metres above the Moselle, through vineyards described as some of the steepest in Europe, and includes alpine-style challenges. The trail is secured with steel cables, ladders, footholds and steps; completing it takes approximately three hours.

The Kliding Waterfall drops approximately 28 metres and is described as the highest waterfall in the Eifel. Reaching it requires sure-footedness, as the paths are narrow and wind closely towards the waterfall.

The Vulkaneifel Therme in Bad Bertrich is described as a spa with thermal water from Germany’s only Glauber’s salt spa, five adventure saunas and wellness treatments.
