Culture and History

Lutzerath is home to St. Stephanus Parish Church in Lutzerath and the Mater Dolorosa filial church in the district of Driesch. St. Stephanus is already mentioned in a document from the Simeonstift in Trier dating from 1097. The historic part visible today was inaugurated in 1781 and expanded between 1962 and 1964 because of a serious lack of space. The church is accessible at ground level from the street. Its pulpit dates from around 1775 and is a Rococo carving. The three-storey tower was rebuilt in 1818 and is described as a landmark of Lutzerath. The church's oldest and heaviest bronze bell dates from 1426 and weighs 820 kilograms.

The pilgrimage church of Mater Dolorosa in Driesch was built in 1478 and has been protected under the Hague Convention since 1984. The Pietà remains the focal point of the church. Fourteen keystones in the choir display the coats of arms of the founders. The Passion altar was installed in 1672 and carved over a period of 30 years by the carpenter Bartolomäus Hammes. The Stations of the Cross around Mater Dolorosa were made of sandstone in 1755 and restored around 1980 by the Lutzerath sculptor Rudolf Müller.

Hiking

The Wald-Wohlfühl-Weg is described as suitable for pushchairs and includes the BuchenGlück, Waldduft and Traumtal forest stations. It is recommended to walk the trail from April to October, as the hammocks are removed during the colder season. The HeimatSpur Wald-Wohlfühl-Weg is a very easy circular trail covering 4.9 kilometres. It starts and ends at the Drei-Eichen-Hütte in Lutzerath; three rest areas in the forest are equipped with forest sofas, benches and hammocks.

Cycling

The Achterhöhe Skywalk extends beyond a rocky outcrop and offers views across the Siebenbach Valley. The mountain biking route reaches Lutzerath after the Maischquelle spring and then continues via the Achterhöhe viewpoint. After the section at Achterhöhe, the route follows the Üssbach through the forest along narrow paths.
