Hiking Trails and Walking Tours

The Tatzelwurm cultural heritage trail is a 7.4-kilometre circular route through varied terrain. Three additional via ferrata sections along the trail shorten and alter the main route. Due to their higher level of difficulty, they are intended for experienced hikers with sure footing, sturdy footwear and a good head for heights. Conditions on the route may vary; check them before setting out.

For a longer hike, try the 17-kilometre Mosel-Traumpfad Koberner Burgpfad. It starts at the Old Rectory in Kobern; allow around five to seven hours for the route, which includes 500 metres of elevation gain. One section passes through the Koberner vineyards. Those interested in historic walking routes through the town can choose from three routes of varying lengths on the Historischer Dorfrundgang Kobern, which features 15 marked highlights. The extended route takes up to two hours and follows the years from 800 to 1600 AD. Public guided tours take place every Saturday at 2 pm from April to October; confirm current dates in advance.

You can also plan a short detour to a viewpoint: a narrow path above the church leads in two minutes to the rock platform in front of Kobern's defensive and bell tower. From there, you can look out over Kobern and the Moselle. Guided tours at the Goloring take place throughout the year and cover the site's construction history and Celtic ways of life. Ask the operator about current arrangements.

Castles, the Stations of the Cross and Art

Since around 1150, the defensive tower has formed part of the fortifications of the Koberner castles on the village side. Around 1190, Gerlach I of Isenburg and Cobern had the Niederburg built on Roman foundations as a state-of-the-art defensive structure. The history of the fortifications can also be traced along the Stations of the Cross, which leads from Kobern up to the castles: 14 stations depict the Passion of Jesus. Designed like small chapels made of lava stone, the stations were built in 1867.

The Dreikönigskapelle in the cemetery in Kobern has well-preserved medieval frescoes in its choir. The central work of art is thought to depict the Adoration of the Magi at the manger, painted around 1420. In Gondorf, Schloss von der Leyen still stands directly on the Moselle and is considered the river's only moated castle.

Museums and Viticulture in Gondorf

The Historisches Weinmuseum Gondorf is located in Schloss von der Leyen. Knowledgeable members of the Gondorf Cultural and Heritage Association show visitors authentic tools and explain the long-established art of winemaking. Wine tastings are available on request; arrange them before your visit.

The Heimatmuseum Gondorf displays historic electrical appliances and a faithfully furnished original schoolroom. There is also a hair salon, a sewing room, a cobbler's workshop and a music room. The Cultural and Heritage Association opens the local history museum together with the wine museum on weekends from May to October. Check which opening dates apply in the year you plan to visit.
