Weißenthurm between the Nette and the Rhine

River landscape and local history

Where the Nette flows into the Rhine is a striking landscape feature of Weißenthurm. The town’s name also tells a story: the White Tower gave Weißenthurm its name. The river confluence and the landmark behind the town’s name thus offer two different themes for your stay—the landscape on the one hand and the town’s history on the other.

Another point of reference in time is the Church of the Holy Trinity. It was designed by Johann Claudius Lassaulx and built between 1837 and 1844. Under an agreement between the town of Weißenthurm and the French state, Hoche Park has been open to the public since 1978. Each place therefore has a different focus: the church’s architectural history and the park’s connection to the public, as set out in the agreement.

A longer tour starting in Weißenthurm

The Nette Nature Trail runs from Weißenthurm railway station to Mayen’s market square. It is about 35 kilometres long and open from April to September. This makes it a substantial hike with two clearly defined endpoints, not merely a short addition to a visit to the town. If the hike is to be the main focus of your trip, its seasonal window is an important part of your planning.

Culture in the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination

The wider Mayen-Koblenz destination also offers distinct cultural attractions. In Mayen stands Genovevaburg Castle, built in 1280 by Heinrich von Finstingen, Archbishop of Trier, and one of the town’s landmarks. Sayner Hütte offers a different perspective on history: it is an anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage and the only monument in Rhineland-Palatinate to receive this distinction. Following restoration, modern exhibitions and multimedia presentations invite visitors to explore; guided tours and creative workshops are also available.

Sayn Abbey is another historic landmark in Mayen-Koblenz. It was founded around 1200, and its abbey church was consecrated in 1202. The exterior paintings dating from around 1255 are considered the best-preserved examples of their kind from the High Middle Ages in Germany. Those more interested in technology can visit the German Volcano Museum at Lava-Dome in Mendig. Across five exhibition areas, the Geyser Museum explains how the world’s highest cold-water geyser works. The New Museum at Sayn Castle also has a children’s area where visitors can try on historical costumes.

Hike or cycling route?

For a different kind of active day, the wider Mayen-Koblenz destination offers the 33-kilometre Vulkanpark Cycle Route. It runs from Mayen via Mendig, Kretz and Plaidt to Andernach, linking numerous attractions in the Volcano Park along a relaxed, family-friendly route. By comparison, the Nette Nature Trail is a hike of about 35 kilometres that starts in Weißenthurm and ends in Mayen. The two routes therefore differ both in activity and in their endpoints—a practical distinction when planning the focus of your trip.
