Culture

The interior of St. Michael’s is dominated by three monumental ceiling paintings known as the “Piesport Sky”. The Moselloreley is a natural monument that rises almost vertically from the banks of the Moselle. Copper glance ore and galena were mined from its rock massif during the periods 1852–1872 and 1937–1939.

Wine

Piesport has 413 hectares of vineyards and is the largest wine-growing community on the Moselle. Around 100 hectares of this vineyard area are located on steep slopes, where mainly Riesling is cultivated. The local offerings of Piesport’s wineries include wine tastings, vintners’ courtyard festivals and other local celebrations.

Activities

Piesport is associated with hiking, Moselle cycling routes, mountain biking, water skiing, kayaking, hang gliding and boat tours along the steep vineyard slopes.

Nature

The Piesport Moselle Loop is an easy 7.98-kilometre circular hike that starts and ends at the Piesport community centre. The route passes through the Piesporter Goldtröpfchen vineyard and follows the banks of the Moselle. The area of the Piesport Moselle Loop was designated a “Beacon of Biodiversity” in 2018. The steep vineyard slopes of the Piesport Moselle Loop provide habitats for many plant and animal species, including species considered rare or endangered.

The “Around Zimmet” hike reaches a high terrace above the Moselle and offers views across the Moselle Valley. The Piesporter Heiligenhäuschen hiking car park is a starting point for the Piesport high-level hikes RW1 and RW2, the Römersteig and the Moselsteig.

Getting There

Piesport can be reached by car via the B53 from the direction of Trier or Bernkastel-Kues; nearby railway stations are located in Salmtal, Wittlich and Trier.
