Nature
Longkamp has an extensive local network of hiking trails. Cycling and mountain biking are other leisure options, and three circular hikes start in the town centre.
The Mühlenweg trail leads through Longkamp’s Mühlental valley along the Trabener Bach and passes seven historic mills. The 11.5 kilometre route combines beech forests, open fields and views towards the Eifel. The Mühlenweg also includes a viewpoint overlooking the Kautenbach valley and shady rest areas at Kaisergarten.
The Hubertusweg trail runs across fields, meadows and pastures with short sections through woodland. The Tiefenbach Tour follows the Tiefenbach valley, where the stream cuts through rock between Longkamp and Bernkastel-Kues. Longkamp KiTa is designated as the nearest or primary stop for the Mühlenweg.
Culture and History
Longkamp was first mentioned in documents in 1030. The town’s Roman settlement tradition is associated with excavated finds from 1888 and 1889 in the Furtflörchen district. Fifteen burial mounds in the Bistum district are cited as evidence of Roman settlement.
The local history museum is housed in a former mill room and milling area and preserves local traditions, history and customs. A 16.5 centimetre-high statue found around 1912 is on display at the Rheinisches Landesmuseum. The Mali House presents information about Africa, particularly Mali.
The wayside chapel at the southern entrance to the town dates from 1775 or 1776 and contains three sandstone reliefs depicting the Passion. The votive chapel outside Longkamp was built in 1892/93 in honour of Our Lady of Sorrows. It was often the destination of a May candlelight procession.
