History
The Leimbach Mill was first mentioned in official records in 1216. It was destroyed by a bombing raid in October 1944; reconstruction began in 1948. The rebuilt mill resumed operations at the end of 1951, and the mill operated mechanically until 1980. It sells various types of grain and flour, animal feed, as well as free-range or organically produced eggs. A cycle route highlights regional products at the Leimbach Mill.
Culture
The St. Lawrence Chapel in Gilgenbach is listed as a hall church dating from 1750. The exterior of the Leimbach Chapel was restored from 1993 to 1997.
Exploring the Area
One stage of the “In the Footsteps of Old Mills” route leads from Adenau through Leimbach to Insul and Schuld. The route is marked throughout with its trail logo and can be reached by train and bus. Near Leimbach, the mill route continues to Birnbach Mill, an old oil and fulling mill below Leimbach.
