Erwitte combines special brine experiences with walking trails, natural areas and historic sites. One highlight is Bad Westernkotten: there, the Hellweg brine baths, graduation towers and paths through the spa gardens are among the possible themes for your holiday. In the town itself, Erwitte Castle and guided tours of the old town by arrangement add to the picture. Brine and trails in Bad Westernkotten
The Hellweg brine baths are open year-round and offer more than 1,300 m² of space to swim and relax in invigorating brine water. The water temperature is 32 to 34 °C, and the brine content is between 3 and 4 percent, based on the original natural brine of Bad Westernkotten. If you would like to combine time in the water with exercise in the fresh air, Bad Westernkotten offers several different trails and activities.
The approximately 6 km “Muckenbruch March” leads through the spa gardens, along the Forellenweg and over the bridge at the Gieseler to the Muckenbruch nature reserve and peat extraction area. The return route passes through the town center and along the spa promenade to the fountain in front of the Hellweg brine baths. For a shorter walk, “Salzspuren” (“Salt Trails”), at approximately 2.2 km, is another option. The different distances give you a concrete reference point for planning your day, without implying a walking time.
Three Nordic walking routes of varying difficulty also start in the spa gardens. Near Graduation Tower II is a large, accessible herb spiral with six themed sections: salt-tolerant coastal plants, mints, native wild herbs, traditional culinary herbs, perennials that can be used as wild vegetables, and Mediterranean aromatic herbs. This adds another botanical discovery to your stay.
Natural areas and exercise
The Pöppelschetal, designated a nature reserve, stretches along the western edge of Eikeloh, a district of Erwitte. In Bad Westernkotten, circular hiking trails lead as far as the Pöppelsche valley. The Pöppelsche recreation area is used by local residents as well as visitors from far beyond Erwitte’s city limits. This means you can make nature a focus of your holiday planning; the circular trails described here and the Muckenbruch March differ in their stated destinations and distances.
History and swimming
Erwitte Castle was first mentioned in a document in 1273. It offers various function rooms for private celebrations such as weddings, birthdays and anniversaries, as well as business occasions, including business dinners, Christmas parties and receptions. For a historical perspective on the town, you can also plan a guided tour of the old town: the Erwitte 1973 e. V. local history society offers tours by prior arrangement.
The graduation towers in Bad Westernkotten also provide a striking cultural and historical feature. Both were added to Erwitte’s list of protected monuments with effect from 18 December 1984 and are regarded as cultural-historical or technical monuments. They are among the largest technical monuments of their kind in North Rhine-Westphalia. Graduation Tower I in the spa gardens is now the longest spa-park graduation tower in North Rhine-Westphalia.
On summer days, Schlossbad Erwitte offers a large sunbathing lawn with mature trees, a shady spot, a 50-metre pool and a children’s pool. If you are travelling with children, this specific facility is a useful reference point for planning a day of swimming. Between the baths, walks, local history and the outdoor pool in summer, you can shape your stay around the activities that matter to you.
