Cycling Along the Ruhr and Through the Districts

An approximately 26 km cycling tour begins in the centre of Wickede and passes Gut Scheda, Schlückingen, Waltringen and Echthausen before returning. It includes climbs and, in Wickede, follows the cycling and hiking path westwards along the Ruhr. Views of the river and the Art and Poetry Trail invite you to stop along the way. After the railway bridge, the cycle path runs between the course of the Ruhr and a small canal, then turns right onto the Ruhr Promenade. To the south, bodies of water and riverside landscapes along the naturally shaped river offer places to rest.

A 29.8 km circular cycling tour also starts in the centre and passes through Wiehagen, Schlückingen, Echthausen and Wimbern; part of it follows the Ruhr Valley Cycle Route. The municipal route “Around and Through the Municipality of Wickede” follows the Strullbach through a landscape conservation area towards Wiehagen. The routes described therefore differ not only in length, but also in the districts and landscapes they include.

Hiking Between RundWickede and the Districts

The “RundWickede” circular hiking trail is 26.5 km long, or 27 km with a detour to the Marienbuche. The route climbs repeatedly, crosses the Ruhr Valley twice and has only moderate inclines. A well-signposted 10 km section starts in Echthausen, offers, among other things, a view of the airfield’s runway, and then leads through Echthausen Forest. The “RundWickede” hiking trail also passes Wickede’s leisure pool shortly before the weir at the Echthausen waterworks.

A total of 27 km of signposted hiking trails are described for the municipality of Wickede (Ruhr), spanning the five districts of Wickede, Echthausen, Wimbern, Wiehagen and Schlückingen. This total network length should be distinguished from the length of the individual circular hiking trail. The Art and Poetry Trail along the banks of the Ruhr is also part of the hiking options. These different figures help distinguish a specific loop from the wider choice of routes across the municipality.

The districts also have their own cultural landmarks. The former manor house in Echthausen is a lovingly restored heritage site in private ownership. Schlückingen has a chapel lovingly restored by its residents.
