Bad Westernkotten combines the soothing tradition of a brine spa with nature experiences, traces of history and a variety of paths. Anyone looking for a holiday apartment in Bad Westernkotten can plan their stay according to their own interests: with time for bathing at the Hellweg Brine Spas, a walk through the Muckenbruch, discoveries of cultural history or relaxing activities in the spa gardens.

Brine, spa gardens and a wide range of experiences

The Hellweg Brine Spas offer bathing in Bad Westernkotten natural brine at 32 to 34°C. The complex includes a water area of more than 1,300 m² and six textile-free themed saunas in a 1,200 m² sauna area. This means that a stay in Bad Westernkotten can also be enjoyed independently of longer excursions.

The spa gardens offer several opportunities for active and sensory experiences. The Kneipp facility has foot and arm pools filled with Bad Westernkotten brine water from April to October. The barefoot trail consists of eight sections with different natural materials and also includes an area with original Bad Westernkotten peat mud. A fitness trail with nine pieces of equipment is available for sporting challenges. In the spa hall, the Wunderkammer displays exhibits from nature, history, technology and art.

Nature trails around Bad Westernkotten

The Muckenbruch nature reserve lies east of Bad Westernkotten. It covers 92 hectares between Westernkotten and Bökenförde in former floodplains of the Gieseler, Pöppelsche and Flachsröte rivers. The area includes a small calcareous fen with embedded spring areas and a combination of habitats that is very rare throughout the region.

The approximately 6 km Muckenbruch Marsh Walk leads through the spa gardens and along Forellenweg, across the bridge over the Gieseler and into the Muckenbruch nature reserve and peat extraction area. It then continues through the town centre and along the spa promenade back to the fountain in front of the Hellweg Brine Spas. For a shorter historic route, the approximately 3 km Historic Landwehr Circular Walk is a good option. It follows a preserved section of the Landwehr, which was built around Westernkotten in 1506.

Cultural history on short circular walks

Bad Westernkotten can also be explored through its technical and religious landmarks. The two salt evaporation works were added to the monument register of the town of Erwitte at the end of 1984 and are regarded as monuments of cultural and technical history respectively. The Schäferkämper watermill is a technical cultural monument with two overshot water wheels.

The Königssood recalls the economic past of the town. It was originally a royal salt-boiling site and formed Westernkotten’s economic centre until 1845. The granary also tells the story of the town: the two-storey half-timbered granary was built at the end of the 17th century and originally came from the historic Weringhof farm in Bad Westernkotten.

The approximately 7 km Lobetag Processional Way begins at St. John the Evangelist Church and leads to the four Lobetag lime trees: Josefslinde, Friedhofslinde, Antoniuslinde and Franziskuslinde. This allows you to combine nature and history in your own excursion plans without committing to a single holiday theme.

The right accommodation for your travel plans

When looking for a holiday apartment in Bad Westernkotten, it is worth first deciding on your preferred travel rhythm.
