Hennef (Sieg) combines themed trails with fascinating insights into history and nature. Families can choose from routes of varying lengths with activities along the way; those interested in culture will find stops ranging from the Beethoven Trail to the medieval town of Blankenberg. You can plan your trip around what matters most to you: exploring together, longer hiking trails or historic sites.

Discover history along the way

Hennef is one of 22 stops on the Beethoven Trail. It connects places in Bonn and the Rhein-Sieg district that Ludwig van Beethoven is known to have visited in person: eleven stops are in Bonn and eleven more in the Rhein-Sieg district. Another way to discover local history is the Hennef Scales Hiking Trail. Its 22 stops lead from Hennef Town Hall via Zissendorfer Hof to the railway station, recalling Hennef’s history as the birthplace of weighing. The Chronos scales can be viewed at several locations.

A historic buildings route runs from the Old Town Hall in Hennef to Haus Telegraph in Hennef-Söven. The history of each stop is briefly explained at a total of 36 historic buildings. The town hall permanently displays the exhibition “Crocodiles under Palm Trees – Mining in Hennef-Rott,” featuring fossils millions of years old from the Hennef-Rott fossil site.

The town of Blankenberg also offers a range of historical themes. The main castle of the medieval fortress, built between 1150 and 1180, is now, together with its outbuildings, under the care of the City of Hennef. The local history museum is housed in the 13th-century Katharinenturm and includes a scale model of the town of Blankenberg and its castle complex. The Wine Museum in the Runenhaus offers insights into the centuries-long history of winegrowing; the wine trail through the former vineyards starts there. An audio tour links twelve listening points along a route of around two kilometres, from the Katharinenturm to the castle. You can access the audio content on your smartphone via the Lauschtour app.

Routes for families and longer days of hiking

Opened in 2025, the Hennef Family Hiking Trail circles the Rosental valley, passing through meadows, pastures, woodland and fields. Fun activity stops teach children about the environment, agriculture, nature conservation and biodiversity. Choose between a short loop of 3.7 kilometres and a longer loop of 5.5 kilometres. The trail includes two information points and nine interactive activity stops, as well as several places to rest, an extra-large bench and a drinking fountain. It is particularly suited to families with children aged around six and older.

For a shorter outing, try the children’s hiking trail in central Hennef. Along its 2.7 kilometres are ten stops where children aged four to eight can explore the town centre with an adult. In the town of Blankenberg, the “Save Blankenberg” adventure trail invites children to solve riddles at eight stops around and through the town. Along the way, they fill in the gaps in a mysterious parchment. These different formats let you choose a route based on its length and the kind of activities you would like to do together.

If you prefer longer distances, consider including the Sieg Nature Trail in your plans. Three stages of this approximately 200-kilometre long-distance trail, which runs from Siegburg to Mudersbach, pass wholly or partly through Hennef. The Kulturlandweg offers a different kind of outing: this circular route starts and ends at Hennef (Sieg) railway station. Alternatively, you can start and finish the loop at the Siegdamm hiking car park. The station is served by the RE9, S12 and S19 lines.

Nature and culture to help you choose

The Kulturlandweg follows the Sieg riverbank through a floodplain landscape lined with old lime trees and climbs above overgrown former vineyard terraces to a higher-up resting place. You can also see remnants of the former Ziethen mine by the Sieg. If you’re interested in geology, visit the Hennef rock garden on Steimelsberg, above the spa gardens in Hennef-Geistingen. This geological trail features 22 rock formations. The castle trail leads to fishponds and the “Ahrenbachtal and Adscheider Tal” nature reserve.

Culture and religious tradition also make Bödingen a destination to consider. Pilgrims continue to venerate the miraculous image of Mary; the original is in the Church of Our Lady of Sorrows. The Compassion Festival has been celebrated there for 600 years, on the fourth Friday after Easter. The Marian Trail leads to the Marienbrünnchen, known for its healing spring and featuring a storytelling stop, before continuing to the richly decorated pilgrimage church in Bödingen.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Hennef, you can start by thinking about which of these experiences you want to shape your trip: family routes with interactive stops, hiking trails of varying lengths and formats, or cultural destinations such as Blankenberg and Bödingen. If starting at the railway station matters to your plans, the Kulturlandweg offers a possible starting point there; the station is served by the RE9, S12 and S19 lines.
