Bornheim offers a variety of routes combining literature and local history, activity along the Rhine, and insights into nature and agriculture. When choosing your holiday apartment, you can decide which experiences you want to focus on: a themed circular walk, a longer route, or a visit offering insights into cultivation and cheese-making.

Discover literature and history on the trails

The Heinrich Böll Trail, just under 3 kilometres long, is a themed circular route through Merten and Rösberg. It offers insights into both Heinrich Böll’s life and the history of the two villages. Along the route, QR codes let you access and listen to interviews with contemporary witnesses and excerpts from Böll’s short story “Oblomow auf der Bettkannte”. This makes literature and local history part of the same trail experience.

Another point of historical interest is the 21-metre-high Hexenturm in Walberberg, dating from the second half of the 12th century. A section of the Eifelleitung is also displayed in front of Bornheim Town Hall and can still be viewed today. The Römerkanal Hiking Trail runs along the Eifelleitung.

Rhine routes and circular tours

Bornheim’s Rhine riverbank stretches for 4.5 kilometres and is a place for local recreation. Walkers, joggers, skaters and cyclists use the Leinpfad. If you’re looking for a circular route rather than a stay by the riverbank, the Bornheim loop of the “Rhenish Apple Route” offers a route of around 40 kilometres for cyclists and walkers. It connects all 14 villages in Bornheim and opened in June 2019.

The Nature and Culture Trail also offers several individual tours in Bornheim, Brenig and Roisdorf, as well as in the Bornheim villages of Hersel, Uedorf and Widdig. The tours are marked in different colours and can be combined. Their starting points are at stops on tram lines 16 and 18, making it possible to arrive by public transport. The different tours let you choose the focus of your exploration according to your interests.

Village scenery, nature and agriculture

In Rösberg, the Heiligenhäuschen Hiking Trail links nine wayside shrines and roadside crosses over a distance of around 6.5 kilometres. The route passes through the village and across the high plateau. Herseler Werth offers a different kind of nature experience: the Rhine island, covering around 15 hectares, is a nature reserve and has been off limits to visitors since 1993. Keep this restriction in mind when planning your excursions.

The Bursch organic farm offers guided tours of its farm and fields for interested groups. Visitors learn about biodynamic fruit and vegetable growing and can sample fresh produce. Afterwards, they can enjoy coffee and homemade cake in the farm café or garden café. Guided tours at Bioland Ziegenhof Rösberg offer insights into keeping White German Noble Goats and making cheese. Visitors can meet the goats in the pasture or in the barn.

Whether you’d rather explore a literary trail, routes through several villages, or learn about agriculture during your stay, Bornheim’s offerings vary in both theme and format. Base your search for a holiday apartment on the experiences that matter most to your travel plans.
