City History and Culture at Wissem Castle
Wissem Castle is the landmark of Troisdorf. The manor house has been home to the internationally renowned Picture Book Museum since the early 1980s. If you are interested in the city’s development, the Museum of Troisdorf’s City and Industrial History, or MUSIT for short, offers a traditional and interactive exhibition. It shows how life in Troisdorf has changed since 1800 as a result of rapid industrial development.
The coach house at Wissem Castle is also a cultural venue: it now hosts exhibitions, concerts, readings, cabaret and other cultural events. The Experience Field of the Senses is also located on the castle grounds. It was established in 2002 by the Troisdorf Creative Workshop; at fourteen stations, visitors can touch, smell, see and feel nature. Red deer and sika deer live in naturalistic viewing enclosures at the wildlife park. The animals can be observed at close range from the walking path and the raised viewing platform. The castle grounds thus offer different ways to experience culture and nature side by side.
The Fisheries Museum offers a different perspective on the region. It presents the cultural history of fishing along the lower Sieg and is located on an oxbow lake of the Sieg, on the boundary between Troisdorf-Bergheim and Niederkassel-Mondorf.
The Wahner Heide and Trails Along the Sieg
The Wahner Heide is a nature reserve of European importance, covering around 50 square kilometres between Troisdorf, Cologne and Rösrath. About half of its area lies within the city limits of Troisdorf. Initial conservation efforts date back to the 19th century. Its varied landscapes make it a popular local recreation area and a refuge for around 700 endangered animal and plant species. At the Wahner Heide visitor centre at Wissem Castle, you can plan and set out on hikes or bike rides through the Wahner Heide and Königsforst.
The Siegaue, also designated a nature reserve, can be explored on walking trails. There is another option for a bike ride: follow the Sieg embankment and cycle paths to where the Sieg flows into the Rhine at Mondorf. If you are looking for somewhere to go by the water, Rotter See offers various swimming facilities, a water playground and a halfpipe for skating. Swimming in the lake is permitted only in the designated bathing cove.
The St. Adelheit cable ferry offers a special crossing: it takes passengers from the Troisdorf side of the Sieg to the Bonn bank in less than two minutes, for fifty cents per person.
