Craftsmanship, half-timbered houses and local history
The Versmold local history museum comprises a smithy, a wagon shed, a carpentry workshop, a tailor’s shop, a historic bakehouse and a lovingly restored, typical Ravensberg Heuerling cottage. The buildings and workshops give the museum complex a rich variety of traditional crafts. The “Versmolder Bruch” nature reserve includes species-rich wet meadows, notable stands of alder carr woodland and a diverse population of meadow birds. From an observation platform in the nature reserve, you can watch rare bird species threatened with extinction. The landscape and wildlife offer a distinct focus alongside the town’s historical and cultural attractions.
For days out walking, there are two circular trails with clearly different lengths to choose from. A circular trail of around 2.8 kilometres leads through the nature reserve. The 13-kilometre Kiwittsheider circular trail also runs through the Versmolder Bruch and is part of the hiking tourism quality initiative in the Teutoburg Forest. In the protected area, follow the marked paths along this trail. Comparing the distances can help you gauge the planned length of your hike without assuming that both trails require the same amount of time.
City park and cycle route
The large city park in the centre of Versmold combines a diverse range of trees with exotic species. It also has a natural water-treading pool in the Aabach stream, with a handrail, as well as a redesigned barefoot path. Alongside the routes in the Bruch, the park offers another way to experience Versmold in an urban setting.
Cyclists can also plan their trip around a specific route: the 73-kilometre “Der Picknicker” cycle route runs from Versmold to Harsewinkel and starts in the heart of Versmold. It therefore offers a different distance from the two circular walking trails.
