History

St. Anna Church was built in the classical style from 1792 onwards and consecrated in 1801. Seppeler Chapel is still a station during the Rogation Days and houses a devotional image. The oldest known written record of the Baroque field chapel dates from 1661. A memorial plaque in Kaunitz commemorates the liberation of 800 Jewish forced laborers by American troops in 1945.

Culture

Haus Verl No. 8 is a special place in the history of local craftsmanship. All stages of button production can be observed there. The building contains a button museum with material on the world of buttons; visitors can also experience two historical manufactories in operation there. In addition, there is a historical button manufactory with an exhibition and the interior of the former Maasjost printing works.

Bürmsche Wiese is a sculpture park in a nature-oriented oasis in the heart of Verl, where works of art invite visitors to linger. The Verler Kirchwege route is equipped with sandstone steles intended to encourage meditation and prayer. The Verler Leben festival includes music and a fair. Verl is also home to the Verler outdoor swimming pool.

On the Move

Four cycling tours under the name “Verl erfahren” introduce the history and development of Verl and its districts. The St. Anna Route is a 30.5-kilometre cycle route that starts and ends at St. Anna Church in Verl’s historic town center. It passes through fields, meadows and forests in parts of the former parish of Verl and runs past historic farmhouses, monuments, wayside crosses, wayside shrines and chapels.

Lake Verler See in Sürenheide is highlighted as a nature experience. The EuroVelo Route R1 is one of the routes that provides access to the area around Verl. For motorhomes, Verl provides free pitches at the Ostwestfalenhalle Kaunitz.
