Since 23 March 1975, large parts of Gütersloh district have been designated as a protected landscape area. Nature reserves with distinctive character include Barrelpäule and Boomberge. Barrelpäule is one of the oldest nature reserves in the district and has been protected under the Reich Nature Conservation Act since 1937. At Boomberge, nutrient-poor sandy sites shape the most significant inland dune area in Gütersloh district. These places therefore highlight two different aspects: Barrelpäule’s long history of protection and Boomberge’s distinctive landscape.

Nature reserves are the strictest category of protected area in Gütersloh district. They serve nature first and foremost, and people as recreational spaces only secondarily. Erlenbruch Nature Reserve, together with the neighboring Schloßwiesen meadows, is a popular local recreation area for tourists and residents. Holter Wald is one of the largest contiguous forest areas in the district. At the Ems springs in Schloß Holte-Stukenbrock, you can experience firsthand how a river begins.

Gütersloh itself also has green spots where you can enjoy some relaxing time outdoors. The Gütersloh City Museum, housed in the former warehouse of the Angenete & Wulfhorst grain business, presents a range of topics across two floors: the ground floor focuses on the textile and metal industries, while the upper floor explores the history of medicine. On weekdays, the museum offers guided tours by prior appointment. More than 30 free cultural events take place in Gütersloh every year. In summer, the open-air stage in Mohns Park hosts events such as concerts and film screenings, including those held as part of the annual “Gütersloher Sommer.”

The district’s cultural offerings also include guided tours of the Peter August Böckstiegel Museum. Located in Werther (Westphalia), the museum has 300 square meters of exhibition space and displays works by Böckstiegel as well as special exhibitions on Classical Modernism.
