The area around Harsewinkel is historically connected with Marienfeld Cistercian Abbey, whose late Romanesque abbey church was consecrated in 1222. Harsewinkel's industrial development was influenced by the establishment of the Claas company.

City history

Harsewinkel became a town in 1973 and incorporated Marienfeld and Greffen as districts. Since the municipal reorganization of 1973, Marienfeld and Greffen have been districts of the town of Harsewinkel.
