Schwanewede: Mills, Hiking Trails and the Weser

The Aschwarden Windmill is a prominent landmark in the Osterstader Marsch. This two-storey Dutch-style gallery windmill was built in 1850 by Martin Kayser and his wife, Meta. Guided tours at the mill take place on May 1, German Mill Day (the second day of Pentecost), and October 3 (Farmers’ Market). Check the current arrangements with the mill association if you plan your visit around one of these dates. According to the operator, the mill café at the windmill is open on Sundays from May 1 to September 30, from 2:00 to 5:00 p.m.; check before visiting whether these seasonal hours are currently in effect.

The Beckedorf Blacksmith Museum offers a different focus. Outside regular opening hours, guided tours are available by prior arrangement. During these tours, visitors can shape metal under the guidance of an experienced association member. This distinction matters for planning: the tour requires an advance arrangement and takes place outside regular opening hours.

Hiking Trails and the Weser

The Schwanewede Hiking Badge route follows selected trails where you can discover the municipality’s nature, history and culture. There is a stamping station along each route where you can stamp your personal hiking booklet.

If you would rather cycle than walk, you can take extended rides along the green Weser dike, with views of large ships. When swimming in the Weser, be aware of ship traffic; also follow local conditions and guidance. Within the municipality, Harriersand has been accessible to visitors via a concrete bridge since 1965.
