Culture and history

Gut Sandbeck is a cultural centre built in 1575 in the Weser Renaissance style. Art exhibitions, theatre evenings, festivals and concerts take place there. The Peat Boat Museum offers visitors the “Peat Boat Captain’s Licence” activity.

St. Willehadi Church has a church building with a tower dating from the 11th or 12th century that was completed in 1746. It houses an organ built in 1731 by the Stade organ builder Erasmus Bielfeldt. St. Mary’s Monastery Church is more than 800 years old and open to visitors all day. It is the surviving Romanesque basilica associated with the Benedictine convent founded in 1182.

The museum complex combines four independent museums or museum institutions in six historic buildings and a modern extension. Guided tours of the Rönn Mill are available by arrangement. The Rönn Mill is a two-storey Dutch windmill built in 1882 and extensively restored in 2003.

Water and activities

The all-weather pool features long swimming lanes, a rock reef, a diving tower, a 32-degree massage pool and a sauna area. Peat boat trips on the Hamme begin at the Osterholz marina, where recreational boaters and canoeists can moor.

The Butenpad is a 16-kilometre circular cycling route through moorland and geestland in and around Osterholz-Scharmbeck. It is connected to the regional cycling network and promoted for cyclists from the region and visiting guests.

Nature

Ludwigslust Wildlife Park is home to around 200 animals from 50 species and includes a petting zoo and a playground for children. The Osterholz Biological Station offers excursions and educational events focusing on the Teufelsmoor-Wümme lowlands.

Local life

At the weekly market on the market square, regional products are sold fresh and directly by the producers.
