In Eggermühlen, various trails explore themes of culture and nature: the Eggertaler Discovery Trail offers insights into the symbolism of modern architecture, poems take centre stage on the Poets’ Trail, and marked hiking trails can be found in the Maiburg. This combination gives you practical ideas for planning your trip – from a circular route to a trail shaped by literature.

Circular Route through the Farming Communities

The Eggertaler Discovery Trail is a circular route through the historic farming communities of Besten, Basum-Sussum, Döthen and Bockraden in the municipality of Eggermühlen. It offers cyclists and hikers impressions of culture and nature, as well as insights into the symbolism of modern architecture. Nine covered shelters along the route provide places to take a break. The Sussum Stone Plateau lies directly on the “Eggertaler Discovery Trail” cycling circuit. At its stops, you can learn interesting facts about the region and its people.

Poems on the Eggertaler Poets’ Trail

Ten information boards present poems by German poets and thinkers along the Eggertaler Poets’ Trail. Near Sussum, a 25-tonne granite erratic has been uncovered in a wooded area; Goethe’s “The Erlking” is presented nearby. The boards and the poem offer a range of literary points of interest. At the same time, the erratic and the poem connect the literary trail with a specific place in the forest.

Hiking Trails in the Maiburg

If you prefer marked hiking trails and a forest nature trail to a circular route, you’ll find them in the Maiburg Nature Reserve. These include the signposted “Vosspädken” forest nature trail. When planning, you can decide whether a circular route for cyclists and hikers or a network of trails with a particular focus on the forest is better suited to your plans.

More Experiences in the Osnabrück Destination

The Osnabrück destination offers other places to visit, each with its own focus. At the Bad Essen-Barkhausen dinosaur tracks, fossilised dinosaur footprints can be seen on a steep rock face. The visitor area includes two dinosaur replicas, detailed information boards and a circular path. The signposted dinosaur trail near the dinosaur tracks is a 16-kilometre circular hiking route.

At the Tuchmacher Museum Bramsche, fluffy woollen blankets are made on working machines that are over 100 years old. At the Kalkriese Museum and Park, exhibits about the Battle of the Teutoburg Forest can be explored using multimedia. The Bad Iburg treetop walk offers another distinctive experience: its nearly 600-metre-long walkway provides an experience in the forest, while its accessible entrance tower stands over 30 metres high and offers panoramic views of Iburg Castle and the Teutoburg Forest. The treetop walk and its accompanying exhibition pavilion offer insights into the geological history of the Teutoburg Forest and are part of the UNESCO Global Geopark TERRA.vita.

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can start by considering which experiences you want to shape your trip: Eggermühlen’s circular and themed trails, or museums, archaeology and nature destinations elsewhere in the Osnabrück destination. The mix you’re looking for offers a practical starting point for choosing where to stay.
