In the municipality of Sprakensehl, southeast of Bokel, lies Bokeler Heide, a nature reserve in the Südheide natural region covering approximately 18 hectares. The area is located at Am Kapellenberg in Sprakensehl-Bokel.
Bokeler Heide is characterized by heather, juniper stands, dry shrubs, and individual older birch and pine trees on nutrient-poor sandy soils shaped by historical land use. It is a rare habitat in northern Germany for plants and animals adapted to these site conditions. As a preserved example of a formerly widespread form of land use, it is significant for science, natural history, and local history.
The protected area of Obere Lachte, Kainbach and Jafelbach covers approximately 1,100 hectares. It includes natural lowland streams, structured streambeds and banks, as well as riparian forests.
The Gothic chapel and its churchyard form the historic village center of Bokel. The chapel is a simple Gothic hall church with a three-sided eastern end.
The pond next to the Sprakensehl church is located directly on the former military road, which today runs as Federal Highway 4. The ensemble of the church and pond is situated immediately beside Federal Highway 4, the modern route of the former military road, and forms a village scene set apart from the main road.
The heathlands in the Südheide invite visitors to take walks at any time of year. Visitors to the heath areas are asked to remain on the sandy paths. Dogs must remain on a leash and also stay on the paths.
The district of Gifhorn has approximately 700 kilometers of recreational cycle paths, as well as around 550 kilometers of everyday cycling routes and signposted themed routes. Regional excursion destinations include the Otter Centre in Hankensbüttel and Isenhagen Abbey.
Regional foods such as asparagus, blueberries, Heidschnucke sheep, and heath potatoes are associated with the Gifhorn district; they are available through regional cafés and farm shops.
