Emmen combines early history, rural traditions and regional excursions in a remarkable way. Early historical houses dating from the 7th century AD were discovered in the village. At the same time, the Rentelmann Mill, with its long history, shapes the villagescape: it was first mentioned in a document in 1225, and its waterwheel is considered a landmark of Emmen. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Emmen, you can therefore plan your stay around historical discoveries, festivals and bike tours.

The Rentelmann Mill and Traces of the Past

The Rentelmann Mill is interesting not only because of its early mention. It is considered the only functioning mill in the Hankensbüttel collective municipality and the oldest in the eastern Lower Saxony region. The waterwheel particularly clearly represents the connection between the history of technology and local identity. For a holiday with an interest in regional culture, the mill provides a specific reason to get to know Emmen not merely as a place to stay overnight, but as a historically significant part of the surrounding area.

A find from more recent history also points to the village’s earlier past: in 1994, a bronze tripod cauldron was found during excavation work at the retention pond of the so-called Rentelmann Watermill. Together with the houses discovered from the 7th century AD, this creates a multifaceted picture of the past, ranging from early historical settlement traces to documented mill history.

Excursions around Hankensbüttel and Emmen

A stay in Emmen can be combined with other regional destinations. The inhabited Isenhagen Monastery in Hankensbüttel can only be visited as part of guided tours. These last approximately 1 to 1.5 hours and, subject to other provisions, are possible from 1 April to 15 October. Plan your visit to the monastery accordingly, taking this tour period and the scheduled duration into account. At the monastery, the garden was reconstructed according to historical plans from the 18th century. It combines a kitchen garden with areas for recreation and adds a horticultural perspective to the historic character of the site.

Wittingen railway station is specified for travelling to Isenhagen Monastery. By car, routes via Hanover, Celle and Hankensbüttel or via Hamburg, Lüneburg, Uelzen and Hankensbüttel lead there. Those who enjoy travelling by bicycle can also consider the “Bike Tour in the Footsteps of Oil”. It leads from Hankensbüttel via Emmen and Oerrel back to Hankensbüttel. The secondary route of the Weser-Harz-Heide Cycle Route is signposted in Emmen on Emner Dorfstraße.

Festivals, Christmas Dancing and Hof Buhr

The annual Schützenfest in Emmen, held on the first Friday in June, is part of the local yearly calendar. Traditional Christmas dancing is also held at a village inn. Such events add a seasonal accent to your trip, while the mill history and regional routes form the main thematic focuses of a stay regardless of the season.

Hof Buhr in Emmen offers meat and sausage products. When choosing your accommodation, you can consider which occasion for a visit or which route is the deciding factor for your trip.
