Fränkisch-Crumbach: Hiking, Legends and Culture

Hiking among meadows, forests and rest stops

Well-marked hiking trails start in Fränkisch-Crumbach and lead through hilly, open fields and meadows and up into deciduous and mixed forests. The alternation between open spaces and woodland shapes the character of these trails. Nearby, a hike to the Rodenstein castle ruins takes you through sunlit beech forests and offers views of castles and farmhouses.

Specific route details are available to help you plan different hikes: the 16.5-kilometre “Rodenstein Circular Trail” section of circular hiking trail FC 1 has possible starting points in Fränkisch-Crumbach at the Protestant Church and the sports centre. Circular hiking trail FC 2 leads from Fränkisch-Crumbach along well-maintained paths, is 11 kilometres long and takes about 3.5 hours to complete. FC 2 is therefore the shorter of the two routes; an approximate duration is also given for this hike.

On FC 2, the route heads towards Nonrod in the surrounding area and climbs to the 12 Apostles, a group of trees with a pleasant rest stop. The group of trees is a distinctive destination for a break along the way. The route can therefore be assessed by its length, the approximate duration given and this place to rest.

Experience legends and summer outdoors

The “Path of Legends” runs along hiking trails between Laudenauer Freiheit and the centre of Fränkisch-Crumbach, with interactive stations along the way. Illustrated panels present Rodenstein legends and related themes; the stories are also available as an audio guide on your phone via QR code. This lets you engage with the legends as you travel, rather than choosing the route solely by its distance.

The Fränkisch-Crumbach outdoor swimming pool is a seasonal option for warm days and is open during the summer months. Facilities include a spacious sunbathing lawn with sunny and shady spots, a children’s playground and a beach volleyball court. Check the current opening days before your visit if you plan to go to the pool during your stay.

Cultural attractions and guided tours

Sarolta Chapel stands in a well-maintained park and is appreciated by the residents of Fränkisch-Crumbach and throughout the region. Guided tours of the Protestant Church of St. Lawrence show the Rodenstein family tombs and a Turkish drum. If you would like to see these historic objects, confirm that a guided tour is available before you travel.

The Rodenstein Museum is currently closed for renovation work. Guided tours are still offered; check their current availability with the organiser and confirm the museum’s status before visiting. This helps you distinguish between the different cultural offerings without confusing a guided tour with a visit to the museum.

The Odenwald as a destination in its own right

In the wider Odenwald travel region, Breuberg Castle offers a distinctive attraction: it has a history spanning more than 850 years and is one of the largest and best-preserved castles in southern Germany. Geological processes that began more than 340 million years ago shaped its formation; remnants of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries give it historical significance. The Felsenmeer Information Centre provides information about its formation, Roman stoneworking, the Siegfried Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Nature Park.
