Rothenberg combines an elevated location with expansive views and an unusually tangible history of water supply. Those planning a trip involving nature, activity and the region’s past will find several different points of interest here: the Rothenberg Geopark Trail focuses on water, certified circular hiking routes lead through the landscape, and a historic facility brings technological development to life. This allows you to base your search for a holiday apartment on your preferred combination of active days, landscape experiences and cultural discoveries.

Water as a common thread

The Rothenberg Geopark Trail in Oberzent focuses on water. Ten information panels explain the importance water had for the lives of people in Rothenberg and the Finkenbach Valley, as well as how the water supply developed. The trail therefore offers not only exercise outdoors, but also specific topics for planning a trip in which nature and local history belong together.

The Rothenberg water supply includes an operationally restored water engine dating from 1902. It is displayed in an exhibition building at the nature parking area on the L3410 state road between Rothenberg and Rothenberg-Kortelshütte. The technical feature is complemented by the history of the pumping station: from 1902 until the 1960s, it initially supplied Rothenberg and later also Ober-Hainbrunn and Kortelshütte with water.

Circular Hiking Routes and Landscape Experiences

For hikers, the Odenwald–Neckar Route Rothenberg/Hirschhorn and the Rothenberg Geo-Trail, which focuses on water, are among the certified circular hiking routes in Oberzent. The Odenwald–Neckar Route starts and ends in Rothenberg. If you walk it counterclockwise, you start at the stone cross south of the hilltop town, near the Alter Schuttplatz rest area; its trail marker is R5.

In the surrounding region, quiet forest paths connect the elevated, scenic location of Oberzent-Kortelshütte with Hirschhorn Castle on the Neckar. Views of the Neckar Valley occasionally open up along the way. This combination appeals to different travel interests: you can choose a route with a regional connection or make the Geopark Trail and its water theme the focus of your trip.

A Technical Monument with a Long History

The Rothenberg water supply facility is also remarkable because of how it operated. Without using external energy, it pumped water from a spring in the Gammelsbach Valley located 40 metres above the pumping station. The water reached the Rothenberg elevated reservoir via a difference in elevation of 280 metres. Those interested in historic infrastructure can therefore see a vivid example of how a local water supply was organised over a long period.

Rothenberg’s history also reaches back to the Middle Ages: in 1353, Emperor Charles IV granted Rothenberg as an imperial fief to the knight Engelhard I of Hirschhorn and his heirs. Together with the water supply system, this makes it a destination where the landscape and history can be experienced in different ways.

Out and About in Winter

Rothenberg’s scenic high plateau is home to a medium-length, flat cross-country ski trail running across the fields. The colder season therefore offers its own opportunity to experience the elevated location. Depending on the time of year and your personal interests, you can weigh up hiking trails, cultural and historical impressions, and winter activities when searching for a holiday apartment.

You can also expand your choice of location to include other destinations: Kortelshütte, Finkenbach, Erbach, Höchst Im Odenwald, Mossautal, Breuberg, Lützelbach and Hesseneck.
