Lützelbach: The Limes, a Church and the History of Technology

Roman Traces in Lützelbach

Eight tower sites of the Odenwald Limes lie within the municipal area of Lützelbach: watchtowers 10/5 to 10/12. The Windlücke small fort is also located there. Near the Lützelbach numerus fort, a nearly 40-metre-long Limes palisade has been faithfully reconstructed, right beside a hiking trail that passes the fort.

A short archaeological trail has also been laid out at watchtower 10/8. It focuses on the excavations of the Reich Limes Commission, which are particularly visible there. The watchtowers, fort sites, palisade and excavations each offer a different perspective on the Limes. Church History in Rimhorn

Rimhorn is home to the oldest of the seven churches in the municipality of Lützelbach. Originally, it was a Romanesque hall church; its construction is thought to date to the 10th century. Around 1000 AD, the choir was added to the nave, and a sacristy was added in 1523.

Its building history thus spans an assumed early origin, the addition of the choir and a later extension. For travellers interested in architecture, this offers a historical focus distinct from the Roman sites: here, the story is that of a church that developed over several centuries.

The History of Technology in Haingrund

In the village of Haingrund, the Yesterchips Museum displays home computers and video game consoles dating from the 1970s onwards. Most exhibits are switched on and are intended for visitors to use. The latter provide evidence of a continent-continent collision that took place between 400 and 320 million years ago. The Felsenmeer in Lautertal was formed by geological processes that began more than 340 million years ago; remnants of Roman stoneworking from the 3rd and 4th centuries give it additional historical significance.

The Felsenmeer Information Centre provides information about the formation of the Felsenmeer, Roman stoneworking, Siegfried’s Spring and the Bergstraße-Odenwald Geopark. Tours and talks on geological development, stoneworking, legends, and the wildlife and habitat of the Felsberg can be booked through the centre.
