On the Sensbacher Höhe, winter trails, scenic views and local history come together. A cross-country ski trail runs along the ridge north of the Sensbach forest cemetery. The viewpoint on the hill is recommended for a visit, and the small forest cemetery is also considered worth seeing. This brings together a range of interests: getting active outdoors, heading to a viewpoint or taking time to visit a historic site. If you are looking for a holiday apartment, first consider which activities you want to shape your stay and what other experiences you would like to add.

Cross-Country Skiing and Winter Hiking on the Sensbacher Höhe

The trail starts at the “Sensbacher Höhe” nature parking area, at 520 m above sea level. A waxing and changing hut is available there. The northern trail is 4.5 km long; with the Höhfeld loop, the distance is 5.6 km. This gives you a choice between two stated route lengths for cross-country skiing.

For winter hikes, the route type is a useful distinction: the hike from the “Sensbacher Höhe” nature parking area is 2.8 km one way and is not a loop. Another winter hike starts at the “Mühs” nature parking area in the district of Ober-Sensbach and can be completed as a loop. When planning with children, you can compare these options without treating both hikes as loop routes of the same kind. The starting points and the route types described offer different points of reference for planning your day.

Cemetery and Architectural History

The cemetery on the Sensbacher Höhe is located on the road to Beerfelden. It was established at the beginning of the Thirty Years’ War; the year 1619 is inscribed on the entrance arch. The cemetery contains the tomb of the House of Counts of Erbach-Fürstenau. The cemetery chapel acquired its present form through a renovation in 1744. The date, tomb and chapel each offer a different way to read the site’s history: they point to its early establishment, the House of Counts and a later phase of construction.

Krähberg Hunting Lodge offers a different way to explore architectural history. It is a regularly laid-out group of late Baroque buildings, commissioned by Count Albert of Erbach-Fürstenau and built from 1761 to 1771. While the date above the cemetery entrance and the tomb are prominent points of reference at the cemetery, the lodge is notable for its architectural form, style and patron.

Comparing Cycling and Hiking

The Oberzent Loop through Sensbachtal is a moderately challenging 28 km bike tour with 530 metres of elevation gain. Distance and elevation gain are two different factors to consider when planning: alongside the distance covered, the amount of climbing also counts. If you want to include cycling in your holiday, these specific details can help you assess the tour rather than classify it simply as a bike ride.

There are also different points of reference for hiking. The Sensbachtal Panorama Trail is one of Oberzent’s certified circular hiking trails. Hiking trails in Oberzent are described as ranging from easy to challenging, passing through wooded highlands and deep valleys. This range adds another hiking option to the specific winter hikes on the Sensbacher Höhe and from Mühs. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first decide whether cross-country skiing, winter hiking, cycling or historic sites should be the main focus. Then check the location of a specific listing against the starting points and destinations that matter to you.
