Neustadt’s Town History and Half-Timbered Houses
From the 14th century onward, Neustadt developed from a settlement for the castle lords’ servants into a fortified market town with its own jurisdiction. Emperor Charles IV granted Neustadt town rights in 1378. When Breuberg was founded in 1971, Neustadt transferred its town rights to Breuberg. These milestones show how the history of today’s district unfolded over several centuries.
Not far from Neustadt’s market square stands the Rodensteiner Herrenhaus, a striking half-timbered house dating from 1569. Below it is a wooden market cross bearing symbols of market peace and market jurisdiction. The house and cross draw attention to different aspects of the market’s history: a preserved half-timbered building and symbols associated with the rules of the historic market.
Breuberg Castle and Its History
Breuberg Castle is one of Germany’s largest and best-preserved castle complexes. The complex includes a youth hostel, a castle tavern and the Breuberg Museum. The Breuberg floodplain lies directly alongside the Mümling River and the 3-Länder-Radweg cycling route towards Mömlingen. Those wishing to include nature and exercise in their trip will find a different focus here than in the town and castle history.
The official B3 circular route connects all five districts of Breuberg. There are also the Bb1 and Bb2 mountain bike trails. The permanent Bb1 route was designated in 2012 in the woodland between Breuberg, Höchst and Groß-Umstadt. Following a positive response, another route, Bb2, opened in Breuberg shortly afterwards. The “Stone & Wood” art symposium takes place in the Breuberg floodplain every two years.
