The Köhlerweg is one of 19 certified premium circular trails. Its 12.4 kilometres can be completed in about 3.5 hours with an average level of fitness. The route runs along the slopes of Kölschhausen to Koppe, the highest point of the tour. Along the way are open stream valleys north of Dreisbach and hillside meadows with views. The distance, estimated walking time and scenery give the trail its distinctive character.
A longer tour takes you through the forests of the former independent municipalities of Ehringshausen, Dillheim, Daubhausen and Greifenthal. It is about 21 kilometres long, has around 180 metres of elevation gain and takes approximately six hours, according to the stated walking time. Compared with the Köhlerweg, this requires more time; the two sets of details help you plan a hiking day of the length you want.
The municipality’s hiking options also include two long-distance trails that follow different routes. The 23-kilometre Ehringshausen Long-Distance Trail on the left bank of the Dill runs through the municipality’s woodland north of the Dill. It starts at the water reservoir in Katzenfurt, passes through Dreisbach, Niederlemp and Breitenbach, and returns to Katzenfurt via Kölschhausen. The 11.8-kilometre Ehringshausen Long-Distance Trail on the right bank of the Dill starts in Daubhausen. Via Ehringshausen-Ichelhausen, it passes through the Ehringshausen and Daubhausen forests and follows the Hohe Straße to Greifenthal-Steckenmesser. The return to Daubhausen runs via Greifenthal along the Historic Huguenot Trail. The distances and route descriptions give you a concrete basis for choosing between the trails.
Koppe: volcano and column formation
Koppe is an extinct volcano, 351 metres high, and the highest elevation in the Kölschhausen district. On its northern side, a column formation is exposed at a height of about 15 metres in an old quarry. This geological feature adds a glimpse into the area’s geological history, visible in the rock formation. Historically, Koppe was the first nature reserve in the Wetzlar district.
Huguenot history and local heritage museum
Greifenthal, a Huguenot village, preserves a special connection to the past: in the early years after its founding, it had no cemetery of its own. The dead were therefore carried to the shared cemetery in Daubhausen. The Historic Huguenot Hiking Trail starts in the district of Greifenthal and offers another point of interest for visitors curious about this history.
The Ehringshausen Local Heritage Museum covers village history, old toys, and the life and work of Dr Hermann Huttel. Its themes complement the historical connections of the districts with everyday life and local history.
