Near Heisterberg, the Westerwald-Steig trail enters Driedorf territory for the first time. It runs alongside Heisterberger Weiher and passes through forests and meadows towards Waldaubach. Another starting point is in Hohenroth: the local Höllbergweg D1 hiking trail begins at the old water house at the edge of the village and heads towards Höllberg. The “Around the Knoten” circular trail, meanwhile, runs for just over half its length through a wide meadow landscape dotted with copses, bushes, old pollarded beeches and small patches of woodland. These trails therefore showcase different landscapes: the D1 heads towards Höllberg, while the circular trail is characterised mainly by meadows and wooded areas.
For a cycling trip, there is the “Around the Knoten” cycle route: it is 32 kilometres long and runs through the Westerwald’s upland landscape. Its stated length and setting provide a concrete point of reference when choosing between cycling and hiking trails. At Heisterberger Weiher, cycling and hiking trails add to the leisure options, so route planning need not be limited to a single trail.
Local history in the townscape
The Schalturm is part of Driedorf’s former town wall. It was extensively renovated and is now a publicly accessible observation tower. The former town fortifications are therefore more than a historic landmark: the tower shapes the townscape and connects Driedorf’s history with a viewpoint visitors can enjoy today.
The ruins of Junkernschloss are also a distinctive feature of the townscape. They were renovated over a number of years and form an ensemble in the town together with a newly created playground and the municipal park. While the Schalturm is a direct reminder of the former town wall, the ruins, park and playground add another focal point to the townscape.

The “Blue Line” leisure bus service connects Hartenrod/Bad Endbach with Heisterberg, Mademühlen and the Krombachtalsperre reservoir via the Aartalsee and Herborn on Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays.
