The Aartal Dam lies above the village of Bischoffen; at the same time, the history of the district goes back to five former mills. The lake, trails and historic sites give a stay a range of possible focuses. When looking for a holiday apartment, you can therefore first decide whether you want your stay to be shaped by water, outdoor activities or local history.
Aartal Dam and recreation
The Aartal Dam primarily serves to protect against flooding. Since its completion in the 1990s, it has also been a destination for recreational sports and leisure. Visitors include members of local windsurfing, sailing and rowing clubs who take part in water sports, members of an angling club, and visitors to the Seeterrasse bathing area.
The bathing area at Aartalsee has a sunbathing lawn; there is no water supervision. It is located in the municipality in the area around the Al Lago restaurant. The lawn and the lack of water supervision are specific conditions of the bathing area, while the Aartal Dam, with its club activities, offers a wider range of recreational opportunities.
Wooded valleys, hills and trails
The area around Aartalsee includes wooded valleys and hills. The Aartalsee Panorama Trail is one way to explore this landscape. It starts at the large car park at Aartalsee, and walking clockwise is recommended. There are several shelters along the trail, and a seating area at Hubertusplatz.
The Aartal Cycle Route offers a different focus: it runs from Herborn in the Lahn-Dill district via Aartalsee to the border of the Giessen district and continues to Bischoffen. You can choose between a trail that explores the area around the lake and a cycle route that connects Herborn, Aartalsee and Bischoffen along its way.
Traces of local history
Bischoffen was known as the “village of five mills.” The district once had five mills; they are no longer operated as mills. The history of milling is therefore one of the town’s historical themes, alongside the Old Church, which is listed as a cultural monument.
The Old Church and the local history museum “Alte Schule” in the Bischoffen district each bear the same designation. Together with the church’s listing as a cultural monument, this is another specific link to local history.
More things to discover in the Lahn-Dill district
The wider destination of the Lahn-Dill district offers other regional themes. In Wetzlar, the Lotte House commemorates Goethe’s meeting with Charlotte Buff and the summer of 1772. Two rooms on the first floor house a permanent exhibition on the origins and impact of Goethe’s first novel, “The Sorrows of Young Werther.” Also in Wetzlar, the Optikparcours invites visitors to experiment with and discover optical phenomena; it includes a walk-through kaleidoscope.
Other examples offer different highlights: the Grube Fortuna visitor mine in Solms-Oberbiel is the only Hessian anchor point on the European Route of Industrial Heritage. The twin towers of Greifenstein Castle offer spectacular views. The Herbstlabyrinth-Adventhöhle cave system in Breitscheid is the largest cave system in Hesse and ranks among the most significant cave systems in Germany.
