Views and Tours in the Hochtaunus Nature Park

Schöffengrund is located in the Hochtaunus Nature Park. At 423 meters, Köhlerberg is the municipality’s highest elevation and offers panoramic views in every direction. If you enjoy wide-ranging views of the surrounding area on an outing, you’ll find a distinctive landmark here. In Schöffengrund and the neighboring municipalities, you can also use well-maintained forest and agricultural tracks for hiking and cycling. These trails are suitable for tours covering many kilometers, too. The range of experiences in nature therefore extends from an outing with a view to longer routes, without requiring you to follow any particular route.

Historic Village Centers and Early History

In Oberwetz, the old village center is one of the best-preserved historic village centers in the southern Lahn-Dill district and a special attraction. The burial mounds offer another glimpse into the past: 47 graves dating from the Hallstatt period, 750 to 450 BC, lie to the right of Oberkleener Straße, about 300 meters from the edge of the village. Their precise location and time period give this site a tangible connection to the region’s early history.

You can also explore Laufdorf on foot by taking in its buildings. The village has well-preserved half-timbered buildings, some of which date back to the 17th century. Laufdorf’s Evangelical Church was first mentioned in a document in 1338 and is one of the oldest village churches in Hesse. The former school on Lahnstraße is also part of the village’s history: built in 1908, it is the only one of the original four school buildings still standing.

Buildings in Oberquembach, Schwalbach and Niederquembach

In Oberquembach, the Old School is a rare example of its type. Built from rammed earth in 1839, it is one of the few remaining buildings of this kind in the Lahn-Dill district. The bakehouse at Usinger Straße 8 is also among the village’s well-preserved old buildings and is worth a visit.

In Schwalbach, the Evangelical Church brings together different periods: after the old church collapsed in 1760, the present church was built between 1763 and 1767. The oldest of its three bells dates from 1692. The Old Town Hall on Reiskirchener Straße is also one of Schwalbach’s most attractive sights. Schwalbach’s mineral spring, known for centuries, was first enclosed around the middle of the 16th century.

In Niederquembach, the church stands on a hillside above the old village center and is surrounded by the remains of an old cemetery wall. Another historic detail can be found on a building at Quembachallee 11a: the year 1707 is inscribed above the framed entrance door. If you’re interested in other cultural attractions, the surrounding area of Schöffengrund has medieval castle ruins as well as Renaissance and Baroque palaces.
