Wilhelm Tower, Casemates and Museums
The Wilhelm Tower was built between 1872 and 1875 on the former upper castle courtyard as a memorial to William I, Prince of Orange. The tower houses the Orange-Nassau Museum. Numerous exhibits and richly illustrated texts tell the story of William I and his struggle for freedom in the Netherlands. The tower and museum thus combine a striking building with a specific historical story.
Dillenburg’s defensive structures lie on Castle Hill: partially uncovered underground fortifications with bastions and defensive passageways known as casemates. The town describes their scale as unique in Germany. A guided tour of Dillenburg’s subterranean world ends with a visit to the well in the Lion’s Den and the Rubens Prison. If you are particularly interested in the history of the fortifications, you can include this tour in your travel plans as a standalone experience.
Two museums with different focuses offer further insights. The Museum of Economic History has been housed in the villa of mining owner Carl Grün since 1983. The building was constructed in 1914/15 in the Neoclassical style. The Landgestüt’s orangery, built in 1719, now houses the Carriage Museum.

The Landgestüt Dillenburg’s culturally and historically significant stud farm shapes the townscape and preserves a centuries-old tradition. An in-depth tour takes you through the stables and the large riding hall, offering insights into the state-owned riding and driving school. In the Brunnenhof, visitors can see horses at work, including, where applicable, being harnessed to historic carriages. Alongside its history, the stud farm offers a vivid connection to horses and carriages.
The Historic Trail helps visitors find their way around historical sites. Signs mark the route, and the QR codes on them provide information about the sites as text or audio files. You can therefore read or listen to the information as you explore the places.
Hiking and Nature in Donsbach
The Juniper Trail is a certified 16-kilometre circular route and one of eight additional Rothaarsteig trails. It loops around the district of Donsbach and starts and ends at the village community centre or the wildlife park in Dillenburg-Donsbach. The set route length makes it easy to plan this hike as a focus of your stay. The Oranier Trail offers a different experience: it takes a wide loop around Dillenburg, passing natural monuments, geological features and historic buildings.
Donsbach Wildlife Park combines spacious, species-appropriate outdoor enclosures with a playground and a petting zoo. In the enclosures, visitors, especially children, can experience nature and animal behaviour at close range. The wildlife park is another way to complement an interest in culture and hiking with a nature experience that may also appeal to families.
Another destination linked to mining history is the Ypsilanta Mine in Oberscheld. The 140-metre-long tunnel once served to drain water. Today, visitors can walk through it via a restored entrance.
