In Erlabrunn, the Eternal Garden lies north of the tennis courts on the Main Cycle Route. It can be reached on foot or by bicycle and is planted exclusively with regional plants from the dry habitats of Main-Franconian Muschelkalk limestone. Anyone interested in plants and landscapes will find a tangible glimpse of the region’s flora here.

At the Gramschatzer Wald Forest Adventure Centre, guided tours provide an informative and hands-on introduction to the forest’s protective and economic functions. In Röttingen, the Paracelsus Herb Garden offers a different focus: around 70 different culinary and medicinal herbs grow there, some cultivated and some wild. The garden is a stop on the Kneipp Vitality Trail, which is laid out according to Kneipp’s five pillars of health.

Historic places and special discoveries

In Ochsenfurt, an almost complete fortification with numerous town gates and towers surrounds the historic old town. The New Town Hall dates from the 15th century. The Lanzentürmchen tower houses a unique clock featuring figures and moon phases. Röttingen also combines local history with a special walking route: the Sundial Trail is about 2 kilometres long and passes 25 different sundials inside and around the town walls.

The oldest buildings at Brattenstein Castle in Röttingen date from the 12th and 13th centuries. The castle was home to various noble families, including the Lords of Hohenlohe. Since 21 July 1984, its courtyard has been the theatrical venue for the Röttinger FRANKENFESTSPIELE. In Rottendorf, the former moated castle and the Fronhof are among the oldest buildings; the castle was built before 1500. Following the laying of the foundation stone in 2012, it was renovated and converted into a library with a reading café and a multi-purpose hall for community events and weddings.

Anyone interested in the history of the Earth can learn about life 200 million years ago at the Trias Museum in Kleinochsenfurt. Würzburg district has 19 museums reflecting the history, traditions, art and culture of the region. In Tückelhausen, visitors can follow in the footsteps of monastic life. In Randersacker, the Franconian Triassic—Buntsandstein, Muschelkalk and Keuper—is presented as probably the most important geological period for Franconian viticulture.

Riverside, play and excursions

The Main river promenade in Veitshöchheim offers a variety of experiences: its green spaces feature sculptures by various sculptors. There is also a large adventure playground with play equipment for all age groups, including a trampoline and a climbing wall. A barefoot path and a Kneipp pool for water treading round out the facilities. For a boat trip, vessels operated by the “White Fleet” run between Veitshöchheim and Würzburg several times a day from April to October. The Nixe ferry in Ochsenfurt’s old town offers regular sightseeing and ferry trips on the Main from May to October.

Wine and regional themes

At the Kapellenberg in Frickenhausen, three massive blocks of Muschelkalk limestone form an “altar”. Among other things, wine tastings are held there in the open air. At Eibelstadt’s Kapellenberg, terroir f offers views of the historic old town and the Main Valley, as well as impressive architecture. A terroir f site on Thüngersheim’s Johannisberg is dedicated to the theme “Wine and Mythology – Wine is divine!”. The second magical site in the Scharlachberg vineyard explores the theme “Wine & Science – Wine inspires”.
